Writing Contests

2/15/11 - TeenInk is a an online and print mag that publishes work for and by teen authors.  They run contests year round and also look for monthly submissions based on different topics for their print magazine.  Go to the website and check it out...may be something that you can win!

2/14/11 - This is a contest forwarded to me by Erin D.  It is meant for high school students but we may be able to sneak in some 8th grade submissions as well.  The essay topic is “Is Out of School Out of Bounds?”.  It is an opinion piece on the idea that there should/should not be a line between what happens and is punishable in school versus out of school (Facebook, parties etc).  More specific info is available at http://www.cbf.ctbar.org/
Contest deadline is March 4, 2011

2/11/11 - FIRST WRITING CONTEST FOR THIS BLOG!!!! (This is a repost of one from much earlier.  I have not gotten very many submissions yet so I am extending the deadline to the end of February)

We are looking for a short 200 to 800 word expository essay that shares a "truism".  This is like a personal story that involves a life lesson, something everyone can learn from and apply to their life.

Deadline for submission - February 28th
Contest Prize - $25.00 Borders Gift Card and the recognition that you are the awesomest writer on an awesome writing blog.
Judges - Pieces will be judged by an independent panel of teachers and writers that I know.

Please post any comments or questions about the contest under this blog post.  Your story/essay can be emailed to me at shorvath@monroeps.org!

2/4/2011 - The following information was forwarded to me about the 2011 Sejong Writing Competition

go to http://www.sejongculturalsociety.org/ for more information...looks like a great opportunity!

2/8/2011 - The Ayn Rand Institute runs a series of essay contests based on her writing.  She is a critically-aclaimed novelist who also wrote extensively on philosophy etc...her books are worth reading regardless of whether or not you choose to submit an essay for one of the contests.
