A Beautiful Fear

Why are lilies the flower of death if they are so beautiful?
Does this symbolize that there is something after death,
Something that is just as beautiful as lilies?

Why are ravens the bird of death if they are despised?
Does this symbolize how some people fear death,
So much that they fear the raven?

  1. I really like the language you used in this poem. I loved the questions you ended each stanza with. I though that the piece as a whole was very thought provoking.
Personally, when I read this poem, I realized how death is ultimately an unknown, and know matter how we try to explain it, we still can't be sure about what will happen when we die. I thought it was great how you highlighted the two extremes of thought - that death is merely passing into something beautiful and wonderful, and that it is something to be feared. Great Job!

  2. It is a great look at how we try to rationalize and deal with death in different ways...I guess my question would be is what is the thought/motivation of the speaker...does she feel like either of the two sides she mentioned...why is she fixating on death imagery right now anyway? Great work!

  3. I enjoyed reading this very much. I liked the way you chose the topic of death- because it gets people thinking. I also liked the way you ended the verses with very open ended questions. I think the whole point of writting is not only to entertaine, but to get a person to think about a certain topic. I think you exceeded in this goal because it certainly got me thinking. Great Work!!!
